Palmira, other mischief by militants ISIS

Militants have destroyed one of the most famous monuments of the ancient city of Palmyra,  and Roman theater facade. The Syrian government has lost control of Palmyra in December, the second time that the jihadist group came and destroyed part of the area declared World Heritage by the "UNESCO", in six conflict in Syria.

"Tetrapiloni" is the point where large colonnaded join Palmyra. It includes a raised stone platform, with a load-bearing structure 4 columns, positioned at each corner thereof. Satellite images released by the Chief of Antiquities in Syria, Maamoun Abdulkarim, destroying his show with only 4 of 16 columns remained standing, while the stone platform appears covered by rubble.

The images also showed considerable damage to the monuments in the center of the Roman theater, with some stone tower completely destroyed. If the Islamic State remains in control of Palmyra, - said Abdulkarim - then there will be even more destructive. According to him, the latest wave of destruction of antiquities occurred between 26 December and 10 January.

Islamic State earlier had taken control of Palmyra in 2015 and held it for 10 months until the Syrian government forces and allied militias backed by Russian air power, expelled jihadists from the city in March.

During this period, the Islamic State has destroyed other monuments, such as 1,800-year-old monumental arch of Palmyra. The city, known in Arabic as Tadmur, located at the crossroads of the ancient world.
